In search of lost time.
Gary Maller. This Digital Life.
Continuing our quest for work-life balance, this week we examine advertising, an activity which as far back the 1940s was regarded by pulp-fiction private eye, Phillip Marlow, as the biggest waste of human intellect outside a game of chess. Marlow was in fact a big fan of chess, but he was right about advertising at least in one respect. Keeping customers and prospects up-to-date with promotions, offers, and events is a time consuming and costly business, unless you automate the process. How do I do that? For a start you need a database integrated into your web site. This means visitors who register on your site are automatically included in your customer records system - called a CRM for short. You can also load your existing customer records into your CRM, and manage marketing, customer enquiries, and account activity from a single, easily accessible spot. How does this save time? First you can use filters within the CRM to profile customers stored in the database. Filters can record the stage of the relationship, i.e. whether the contact is a sales lead, potential sale or actual customer account. Filters can also classify contacts by their product purchase or industry type. You can even the record a customer's personal information - like the date of a spouse's birthday - very handy if you’re a florist or a gift shop and you want to send out timely reminders. What's next? If your database is integrated with online marketing functions such as a newsletter perhaps, you can easily send out electronic flyers by email to a group of selected contacts. No more graphic design or print costs. No more postage either. And you can store and send different electronic flyers or newsletters to different groups as required. Looking for lost time? You've just found it with marketing systems any business can afford.
